(I just looked that up) I will attempt to go "through" the sights of corners and heatwaves. I will navigate through corridors of fake-isms. It should be a wonderful journey. My full length record comes out on February 21st. Expect an interactive cd release party TBA.
2.What is the cultural function of the "entertainer" in our society?
3. Should it include a social and political responsibility?
4. Is the role of the entertainer to engage people, or to disengage them? Is it possible to do both simultaneously?
5. Are we OVER entertained, and UNDER educated?
For example I, (an entertainer?) suddenly put a price on my art ($500). I leave my own community, travel to clubs, Universities, and Art Museums presenting the world from my own limited perspective for approximately 45 minutes in song and dance. People respond. People dance. People get inspired. People engage/interact with me. Some maybe think THEY could be the one on the stage saying something. They're right. I am not special.
I am a commodity. I am an entertainer. I am also a cultural construct. I am part of an economic and cultural hierarchy that I cannot extricate myself from. I take things for granted. I forget to ask questions.
What is the role of the entertainer in our culture?
We all have a space where our cultural maps and our personal volition meet, and I have a hunch that commodification doesn't always have to kill, but I do want to keep trying to understand why it is that people come together, and if our current cultural rituals, Ie: rock shows, tv shows, plays, drunks in bars etc., are serving a purpose beyond a quick distraction from our daily lives. Are they providing insight into an oppressive economic system that DOES NOT work. Are they even supposed to? Wouldn't it be better if people just stayed in one place and focused on their own communities? ALTERNATIVE ECONOMY. I don't have answers for these. They are just some questions. They are personal.
